First thoughts on the idea of my employer becoming part of the UK's first "Care Trust" are reasonably favourable - mainly because, viewing things from the provider rather than commissioner side makes things appear far more fragile, and makes privatisation an ever present threat! Worked reasonably hard on combining several ancient systems into one, and went home with a pretty robust headache from poring over lists of tiny figures. Ordered some cheap memory from Jungle. Celebrated a week of relative abstinence with ice cream. Played with metatheme and built the new control-center. This left me with pretty horrible looking desktop settings, and no immediately obvious route to fixing them! Decided not to worry. New control-center is, however, very lovely indeed. Kept a promise I made after breaking my arm today too. After struggling to dress in my crumpled washed-and-left shirts because of my weak and painful limb, I vowed to start ironing things. No-one believed me. Today I finally purchased my first iron in the Tesco sale (£8.99 - a bargain!).
Finally froze gwvedit 0.3.8 and handed it over for translating. Mainly happy with it - no huge bugs, reasonably stable and safe, and practical and useful for *most* users. Productive day workwise - saw me tidying, reorganising and removing shelves and furnishings. Feel vaguely better already, but the turmoil turned up even more relics which remind me of the not-so-distant past. A virus stalks the town today, and has laid low friends and colleagues alike.
An early start following a rude awakening! Miserable weather - decided to just get on with things, and achieved an incredible amount considering lack of bodies in the office. Further gwvedit hacking sees it writing backup files, reverting to said backups when the user so chooses, and (thanks to Kabalak) building cleanly i18n-wise. Otherwise, I'm feeling a little concerned and preoccupied about people - I suppose it's nice not to be thinking this way about myself for a change. Preserved a little bit of history today...
Less restless today, but perhaps a little bored. Spent some time responding to Kabalak's observation that gwvedit won't build on systems without consolehelper. Determined to keep this feature after sweating over getting it working, so hacked up a --enable-consolehelper=no build-time option which was surprisingly less painful than expected. Much updating of the site yesterday morning, including the CV. Lazed about talking and drinking (rather a lot of) wine in the sun yesterday afternoon, which was really good and somewhat unexpected. Technically finished all the course material for T171 tonight too. Last module pretty interesting. Despite this early finish, what are the bets that my essay (due 31st August!) is still late...
I've had a home on the web for more years than I care to remember, and a few kind souls persuade me it's worth persisting with keeping it updated. This current incarnation of the site is centred around the blog posts which began back in 1999 as 'the daylog' and continued through my travels and tribulations during the following years.
I don't get out and about nearly as much these days, but I do try to record significant events and trips for posterity. You may also have arrived here by following the trail to my former music blog Songs Heard On Fast Trains. That content is preserved here too.
