October. Never a successful month for me usually. So far, its been a succession of the tiniest peaks and troughs - nothing major. Tomorrow I should find out if I have an interview for my job. Trying to read the situation over the past week or so has been near impossible, and has resulted in more frustration and unhapiness than complete ignorance would have done. The weirdness of having to conduct working life as usual is the strangest part - planning for next year at a meeting next Tuesday, discussing hearings due in a fortnight or so.
Otherwise, early indications of good family news puts things into perspective nicely.
Raging toothache prevented me from sleeping much last night. All in all, not a great preparation for going out this evening, especially after the last time. However, despite needing to spend time filling in job applications, managed to get myself into a reasonably pleasant frame of mind in time. Felt a bit distant and disconnected - I really have so little to talk about nowadays - my head is full of the upcoming Belle & Sebastian records, strange books, and esoteric work related stuff.
The Comedy Store Players were excellent - a criminally small audience watched a couple of hours of clever, funny and entertaining improvisation. Surreal stuff. Uncomfortable acoustic evening visit afterwards.
Long and very pleasant walk this morning, visiting curious Commonwealth War Graves, then along Bristol Road Lower, exploring parts of Weston only previously seen by car. Dodged two sets of churchgoers successfully on Baytree Road, and headed back via Milton Road. Realised on the way that the unconfirmed rumour of a further attempted assault in Weston was true, and found my way blocked by the Police and a camera crew! Things have been very strange here lately.
We've branched Gaia for an alpha release. It now does everything initially planned, and we've ironed out all the major bugs. We're just some useable question data away from the release now - not bad progress, since I note the CVS server was set up on 30th August!

Its probably not of huge consequence, but as an experiment I've set up an RSS feed of the ten most recent stories on this site.
The link is in a little box to the right, or you can point your preferred RSS aggregator at:

If you find a use for it, let me know!
Lived vicariously today. First, went to the car wash with my sister and mother - I haven't been through one of these automated washers since I was tiny, and the new high tech ones are possibly even scarier than the old fashioned ones! Later, accompanied a friend on a shopping trip for stereo system components. Amazed at both the excellent deals available at Richer Sounds, and at my friend's ability to stay within a budget - something which declines in proportion to the size of the spend where I am concerned!
I've had a home on the web for more years than I care to remember, and a few kind souls persuade me it's worth persisting with keeping it updated. This current incarnation of the site is centred around the blog posts which began back in 1999 as 'the daylog' and continued through my travels and tribulations during the following years.
I don't get out and about nearly as much these days, but I do try to record significant events and trips for posterity. You may also have arrived here by following the trail to my former music blog Songs Heard On Fast Trains. That content is preserved here too.
