First day of my two-day holiday from getting testy with students and their kinfolk. Decided to take a spin down to Exeter - firstly because I've never really given it more than a cursory Sunday-morning glance, and secondly because of the associations I discovered in "Born in Exile". Leisurely 10:30 start, arrived by 11:15. Long circuit of the northern suburbs, then down into the city. Wandered around the Cathedral Close, and visited some of the shops. Amazed by a couple of elderly holidaymakers making mental notes on which supermarkets were available (but later had a worryingly similar conversation!). Walked to Central Station, and then around Northernhay and Rougemont Castle gardens. Pretty exhausted on my return. Lazed around all afternoon. Happily relaxing with cider now.
Played around with porting stupid old gpuce
to GNOME 2.0 for a while. Simple enough, but got lost in making improvements to the gallery making tool, and writing a DTD for the gallery files. It was time for sleep before I even noticed.
Finished the splendid "Born in Exile" - which left some interesting questions for me. Caught up with events locally. Odd, rather worrying times, but people seem to be capitalising on their reserves of strength here. Visited newly refurbished bookstore in town. Has a coffee area - hmm, what would Bernard say? Better though, in the sense it actually has some books in stock! Revolutionary idea for Weston booksellers in recent times. Wandered around town, carried shopping, went to the pub. Good to talk to some people I almost never see. Stayed up too late, and stumbled to bed covered in candle wax. Another strange day.
A bit of a strange day. Discovered planned entertainment was cancelled. A long, frustrating day - during which my productivity failed me I'm ashamed to say. Thank goodness its pay day, and the boost to funds from the laptop will help too. Booked a ticket to see Lambchop next week, which falls on one of a couple of days off I have planned. Feeling frustrated and full of the nervous energy I'd collected in order to go out in public without feeling useless. Probably shouldn't have gone to Bristol, as I just became intensely annoying to all concerned. When will I learn? Bought cakes at work to celebrate GNOME 2.0, availability of funds, and Friday in general! Increasingly obsessed with George Orwell's various essays.
I've had a home on the web for more years than I care to remember, and a few kind souls persuade me it's worth persisting with keeping it updated. This current incarnation of the site is centred around the blog posts which began back in 1999 as 'the daylog' and continued through my travels and tribulations during the following years.
I don't get out and about nearly as much these days, but I do try to record significant events and trips for posterity. You may also have arrived here by following the trail to my former music blog Songs Heard On Fast Trains. That content is preserved here too.
