First supervision session of new job today. It seems (and experience has taught me to exercise caution in such matters) to be going pretty well. I suppose my previous experience and general way of thinking about stuff lends itself to this work. Perhaps - as noted by a certain local govt. financial manager - the maxim about rising to the level of one's incompetence holds true for me? In any case, I find myself reasonably happy about work right now. Resigned myself to the likelihood of Pix never returning today. Not an easy or pleasant realisation. It was part of a generally troubled and worrisome evening. The recent gtkdial release resulted in me consuming unheard of levels of Demon's bandwidth - 70mb over 24hrs on Wednesday. Need to sort out the project's complete move to Sourceforge I suppose.
Finally released gtkdial 0.3.8 and made all the usual announcements. Abandoned search for Pix after another night of wandering about likely places. Have pretty much exhausted the options, and given the range of her previous wanderings she could be almost anywhere! She is much missed here however, having been a constant companion during my time off work. Latest essay returned, yielding a decent mark considering how speedily it was assembled.
Moving day for the folks, which reportedly goes well - despite their 'phone not being transferred as planned. A promising day at work, with reasonable progress on several fronts. This did however involve fiddling with Excel, which just made me long for Gnumeric since I've become accustomed to it and find the alternatives 'quirky' at best. A wet walk home, and more fruitless (and increasingly futile I fear) cat searching. Yet to sample the promised speed improvements of new Nautilus. Thumb-twiddling hacking-wise, waiting for gtkdial release possibly tomorrow.
Attempted to get to Burnham to see my parents who are moving house tomorrow. Thwarted by bus driver who "accidentally departed from the wrong stop"! Spent much of the day trying to tape bits of Wimbledon as promised, which had become a bit frustrating because of the stop-start nature of play in the past couple of days. England lost the first test. Compiled Sawfish 0.99 in the hope that it might just be a bit more resiliant than 0.38 has been. Pretty much losing any hope of finding the cat now. I'm certain she's wandered off and become lost rather than anything more sinister, but I'm really unsure of how to track her down. I've covered quite a bit of ground in the general direction of her previous wanderings without result.
I've had a home on the web for more years than I care to remember, and a few kind souls persuade me it's worth persisting with keeping it updated. This current incarnation of the site is centred around the blog posts which began back in 1999 as 'the daylog' and continued through my travels and tribulations during the following years.
I don't get out and about nearly as much these days, but I do try to record significant events and trips for posterity. You may also have arrived here by following the trail to my former music blog Songs Heard On Fast Trains. That content is preserved here too.
