Managed to get quite a bit of work done before hospital appointment - which predictably took a long time, but finally sees an end to the whole silly broken arm episode, as the consultant discharged me. A bit more physio, but otherwise I can expect gradual improvement over the coming months and no long-term damage. Played with gnome-vfs quite a bit, but try as I might cannot get sensible things out of a GnomeVFSFileInfo struct. It's driving me nuts, but I know its almost certainly my fault. Don't think I've got a full hit of the locally prevalent virus, but felt pretty useless all day, and had some - well, symptoms shall we say? Feel exhausted and ready for sleep.

Industrious day. Cleaned everything. Attempted to iron stuff - not as easy as it looks. Spent a long time typing for money - its hard to work on something you perhaps wouldn't normally read and not feel the urge to edit it! Still, its money - and that's a sorely needed commodity here right now. What looked like a nasty bug in gtkdial turns out to be a strange error generated by YaST (the SuSE config tool) and the way it sets up modems. Events early in the day remind me how much is very uncertain still, despite the relative peace and stability which seem to have descended here lately.

Today is an important anniversary for me. I don't think it will register with anyone else at all, and that's actually OK - and probably even for the best. Made my own metatheme which solved my ugly desktop problems - its as simple as hacking together a little XML file and copying the gtk+, Sawfish and Nautilus theme directories of choice into your own metatheme directory. The version of Evolution got bumped on CVS today, so now I'm running 0.11/Beta 1 for real! Train to Burnham. Played cricket - did OK despite weak arm. Wandered around town - realised how low I've slumped. Anniversaries of any sort are probably crap, right?

First thoughts on the idea of my employer becoming part of the UK's first "Care Trust" are reasonably favourable - mainly because, viewing things from the provider rather than commissioner side makes things appear far more fragile, and makes privatisation an ever present threat! Worked reasonably hard on combining several ancient systems into one, and went home with a pretty robust headache from poring over lists of tiny figures. Ordered some cheap memory from Jungle. Celebrated a week of relative abstinence with ice cream. Played with metatheme and built the new control-center. This left me with pretty horrible looking desktop settings, and no immediately obvious route to fixing them! Decided not to worry. New control-center is, however, very lovely indeed. Kept a promise I made after breaking my arm today too. After struggling to dress in my crumpled washed-and-left shirts because of my weak and painful limb, I vowed to start ironing things. No-one believed me. Today I finally purchased my first iron in the Tesco sale (£8.99 - a bargain!).

I've had a home on the web for more years than I care to remember, and a few kind souls persuade me it's worth persisting with keeping it updated. This current incarnation of the site is centred around the blog posts which began back in 1999 as 'the daylog' and continued through my travels and tribulations during the following years.

I don't get out and about nearly as much these days, but I do try to record significant events and trips for posterity. You may also have arrived here by following the trail to my former music blog Songs Heard On Fast Trains. That content is preserved here too.
