Worked quickly and effectively all morning - a rare event, and completely due to my wish to take the afternoon off. to make a rare trip to Bristol. Since the events of late 2000 this has usually meant quite a bit of discomfort and trepidation - but strangely, and happily, this time it wasn't like that. Had a very good time, and feel much better for getting out of Weston for the first time in a very long time. Realised after the Post Office closed that I really need to get my act together and purchase Euros. I also need to fill in some of the stack of job application forms which is amassing here.

Built and messed around with Falcon's Eye, which puts a really nice isometric graphical frontend onto good old Nethack (I put a screenshot here, in case Mr Bristow is reading!). Tried hard not to get sucked into a long game, but didn't succeed entirely. A temporary reprieve from moving to Somerset House means I've actually done quite a bit of work over the past couple of days. I've even managed to study a bit. A couple of job applications in the pipeline also. A great deal of GNOME vs. Mono flaming going on these past few days.

Spent much of today in various activities designed to avoid either studying or completing application forms. Started by rebuilding GNOME2 on the new box. With that done, and a strange bonobo-activation irritation cleared up, I set about the reinstatement of this website. Why did it disappear? Mainly through a bout of silliness during the past couple of weeks, partly because I'd been thinking it was sort of stupid for quite some time. In any case, I decided it needed to come back for a little while at least. Spent much of the afternoon messing around with stylesheets to make it look reasonable, but preserve its usefulness in Lynx. Finally happy, but there is sure to be more tweaking. So what hasn't made it into the daylog over the past couple of weeks? Not much really - finally saw Lord of the Rings, failed to get lots of jobs, and continued to endure escalating work annoyance. Not much changes here.

The only half-serious 'weird october' stuff takes a turn for the serious. Still have the capacity to be shocked I suppose. First of a couple of 'birthday-avoidance' days off. Spent it wondering what on earth is happening to the world, and what I should do next? Finally got commit access to cvs.gnome.org, which is a bit of a landmark. Refused some Foundation Applications which lacked evidence of contribution. Felt slightly guilty, but I guess there is no room for this. Strange flurry of OU/T171 related mail asking for advice on the course. Answered honestly. Some concerns about returning to work on Monday, but there are more immediate tricky situations to confront I suppose.

I've had a home on the web for more years than I care to remember, and a few kind souls persuade me it's worth persisting with keeping it updated. This current incarnation of the site is centred around the blog posts which began back in 1999 as 'the daylog' and continued through my travels and tribulations during the following years.

I don't get out and about nearly as much these days, but I do try to record significant events and trips for posterity. You may also have arrived here by following the trail to my former music blog Songs Heard On Fast Trains. That content is preserved here too.
