History

This site replaces my previous attempts at recording daily activities and general wanderings of my mind. Older versions can be found courtesy of The Wayback Machine:

www.gtnorthern.demon.co.uk (Oct 1999 - Apr 2003)

www.greatnorthern.demon.co.uk (May 2003 - date)

As of December 2004, I've recovered everything possible of the content of those previous sites, and it is now available here.

Areopagitica 2.4 & Lycidas 0.91

In August 2003 I finally started work on a long promised project, to write a small Content Management System which I could actually understand and use. Areopagitica has now been pretty much complete for over ten years, but would need a great deal of cleaning up, bugfixing and nifty packaging before it would be useful to anyone else.

In December 2014, having used Bootstrap and jQuery for a number of projects, I decided to revise the frontend of Areopagitica to use these frameworks. One thing led to another, and on 21st January 2015 I was confident enough to talk about this as Areopagitica 2. This automates a whole lot of processes which would have required me to access the backend of the database previously.

Areopagitica uses PHP and MySQL and runs on a server powered by Ubuntu Linux and Apache.

Subsequently I developed Lycidas, a native picture gallery management tool to recover images used on the previous site and stored in Coppermine. This is specifically designed to integrate with Areopagitica, and remains a current project.

Movebook 1.12.0 (2022-04-30)

The Movebook is a means of storing and analysing rail journeys, written at a time when I was making considerably more trips than I do now. However, given that the data is historically interesting I've recently restored the link between the Movebook database and Areopagitica, and begun to piece together more recent journey records.

I've had a home on the web for more years than I care to remember, and a few kind souls persuade me it's worth persisting with keeping it updated. This current incarnation of the site is centred around the blog posts which began back in 1999 as 'the daylog' and continued through my travels and tribulations during the following years.

I don't get out and about nearly as much these days, but I do try to record significant events and trips for posterity. You may also have arrived here by following the trail to my former music blog Songs Heard On Fast Trains. That content is preserved here too.
