Looks like a secondment into School Admissions will be happening - starting next week. This is a significant promotion, a big challenge and somewhat scary - pleased people think that I'm up to it. There was some disbelief about the democratic way that a colleague and I decided how to approach this vacancy in a pain-free way, avoiding a recruitment exercise and lots of stress. In any case, big changes are afoot. Its going to be a very odd week - lots going on. Staying available in case of funeral-related errands etc.
New Year has started very quietly here. Stayed in on the night, and listened to the various firework displays which continued well into the morning. Restless and agitated. Much consideration of the changes proposed at work today. Ready to go public next week maybe? Rebuilt much of GNOME, ate far too much - an increasingly common event.
Forced back into normal routine by return to work - and probably not before time, because I was feeling very strange indeed. Managed to get a decent sleep last night. Had to answer tricky 'have a nice christmas?' type questions today. Hard to explain the mixture of sad, happy, panic and disbelief which constituted the few days since I was last in the office! Seem to have an annoying cough. Work is all reports and audits now, as the 2002-2003 academic year fades slowly into the next one. Next Monday seems to be shaping up to be a bit of a watershed day. Fixed httpd and redhat-config-*/python stuff.
Surprise visitors lure me out last night. Had a very drunken and somewhat disorderly evening, but it left me exhausted which is a bonus because sleep still eludes me. Downloaded ISOs of new RedHat beta. Installed OK, but httpd panics the kernel and the python-based config tools all seem to be broken. Shadowed, coloured X cursor looks nice but takes some getting used to in terms of selecting text.
I've had a home on the web for more years than I care to remember, and a few kind souls persuade me it's worth persisting with keeping it updated. This current incarnation of the site is centred around the blog posts which began back in 1999 as 'the daylog' and continued through my travels and tribulations during the following years.
I don't get out and about nearly as much these days, but I do try to record significant events and trips for posterity. You may also have arrived here by following the trail to my former music blog Songs Heard On Fast Trains. That content is preserved here too.
