Last day of work before customary birthday holidays. Strangely quiet. My worries that colleagues would not understand my reticence on this matter was unfounded, and I confess that I had a very nice day - lots of presents, cards and good wishes. I'm almost sorry I'm not having my birthday...

Woke to driving rain. Wandered to Swansea station, getting very wet. Asked by newspaper vendor "Is it raining?" - declined detailed answer in case it was impolite, and simply pointed to dripping head instead. Fast and on-time journey back through a very damp and overcast South Wales. Got drenched again...

Later start than I'd planned, due to good sleep. Excellent breakfast and some very old sci-fi from my youth on TV. Fine weather, so out to the beach, and thence via bus to Oystermouth, Ice-cream at the near-legendary Joe's. Walked to Bracelet Bay and clambered precariously over some rocks. Saw...
