In a bleary-eyed, early morning effort to clean up the GConf schema conflicts after upgrading the gnome-panel, I managed to trash enough of my system here to make a reinstall practically the only option. Restored bits from backups, but needed to rebuild GNOME2, which was a good chance to clean...
