St Olave, Hart Street
On the way to Tower Gateway DLR station I wandered by St. Olave, Hart Street to try to get a reasonable picture of its rather grim gateway. A better picture than my previous attempts.

St Anne, Limehouse
The main purpose of my trip East was to visit several of the churches built by Nicholas Hawksmoor as a result of the 1711 act. I headed first to St. Anne's via the DLR and a walk along a very cold, rather grim Commercial Road. The building was well worth the journey however...

Vanbrugh said the new churches should be 'of solemn and aweful appearance' - mission accomplished!

5
"White and gigantic, it rears like a startled horse at the appearance of London upstream." (Young & Young 1956, p284).

This strange monument, apparently built concurrently with the church is fascinating. Hawksmoor is said to have considered incorporating pyramids into the towers of the church.

Pevsner describes this as "A remarkable pyramid, of unknown date and unknown purpose" (Pevsner 1952, p415)

St George in the East
Upstream to Shadwell. It took some searching to find St. George on my map, and I resorted to William Kent's 1938 'London for Everyman' to locate it. Again, and impressive and massive western tower. Much of the church now seems to be a shell around flats, with a smaller chapel inside the west doors.

I've had a home on the web for more years than I care to remember, and a few kind souls persuade me it's worth persisting with keeping it updated. This current incarnation of the site is centred around the blog posts which began back in 1999 as 'the daylog' and continued through my travels and tribulations during the following years.

I don't get out and about nearly as much these days, but I do try to record significant events and trips for posterity. You may also have arrived here by following the trail to my former music blog Songs Heard On Fast Trains. That content is preserved here too.
