St.George's Day - and, I am reliably informed - Shakespeare's birthday. A very strange day of trepidation, negativity but suddenly revealed positives. Set out for work for first time since November in bright sunshine. Trains messed up - no surprises. A very odd, quite difficult day. Laptop continues to disappoint. Suddenly, whilst playing around with Kernel VGA appends, up pops the framebuffer, and things start happening. Hope I sleep better tonight.

The laptop is delivered, and despite a painless install of RedHat 7.1, I just cannot get X working properly. Cooking goes reasonably well, and despite the looming horror of tomorrow and the stress of cooking for other people, I manage to have a really good time! Further attempts to get X going just frustrate me further in my insomnia.

Weirdness accelerates. A delivery is expected here tomorrow afternoon. I've made most of my cooking preparations. Played with gtkdial quite a bit today following a feature request this morning. Might aim for a release next weekend if I manage to get an essay done and cope with work all week.

A very weird end to a very weird week. I sense the presence of some oddness. Hmm... anyway, news of a delivery on Sunday for the newest bit of the network here at GNEHQ, leaving me precious little time to avoid Windows ME and configure what I think will be called > in the tradition of naming machines hereabouts. Genie Mobile promptly respond and agree to dispatch a replacement handset ASAP.

I've had a home on the web for more years than I care to remember, and a few kind souls persuade me it's worth persisting with keeping it updated. This current incarnation of the site is centred around the blog posts which began back in 1999 as 'the daylog' and continued through my travels and tribulations during the following years.

I don't get out and about nearly as much these days, but I do try to record significant events and trips for posterity. You may also have arrived here by following the trail to my former music blog Songs Heard On Fast Trains. That content is preserved here too.
