In retrospect, this was not a good week to be off - wrong end of the month financially, and at a time when the rest of the world is either hard at work or on its holidays here in Weston, which has made for a frustrating week. Hid out indoors in a self-inflicted state of misery for the beginning of the week. Relieved the boredom by playing with Red Hat's new beta - known as NULL. Impressive, with only a few annoyances. Worked on Foundation stuff a bit, to the extent that I learned some PHP and reacquainted myself with MySQL after a long period of absence.

The world has gone mad! Well, at least my little corner of it has. No-one is very happy today, even on IRC there are rumblings of confict and discord. I mostly stayed in, ate too much, and tried in vain to get mozilla to build with PSM properly. It won't, but galeon2 is now playing nicely. I suppose having no browser with SSL will preserve my bank balance if nothing else. Starting to consider what to do with next week, might disappear to Wakefield to find George's birthplace. Finished "The Emancipated" today - its taken a long time, partly because conditions have not been conducive to reading, also because bits of the story have been uncomfortably close to real life. I should really be writing up the minutes of the GNOME Foundation Membership Committee IRC meeting yesterday. Evolution is just about the only GTK+1.x application on my desktop, now Firestarter has ported.

Feeling pretty exhausted. Rose to the challenge of tomorrows second deadline at work - mainly because I know I have a week and a day off afterwards. Brief journey to Bristol after work. Beautiful evening but I'm too tired to be very communicative or much fun. One week of DSL here - its still really weird to just be connected, after years of watching the clock and disconnecting when I'm hoping for a phonecall or something. Recently, I've been wrestling with Galeon2 and thus needing to build Mozilla from CVS. Its apparently easier than it used to be. Hmm. DVD player will now hopefully show up on Monday.

Back to work - finding it somewhat tricky at present, but pleased to learn that I'm not alone. I'm seeing so many differences in my current and previous careers - I'm just not used to believing that problems are not instantly my own fault! Its a local birthday, so I had to tear myself away from the incredibly tense last 30 or so overs of the Second Test, but it was good to get out in the first sunshine for some days. Late and very funny evening. Ended up at the 'Bengal Raj' - a much recommended restaurant which I've never quite managed to get to. Really excellent food, brilliant service. Rivals even Clifton's wonderful 'Bombay Spice' and Glasgow's 'Star of India'. Stumbled home very late indeed - a mistake perhaps, considering recent insomnia. Think we confused fellow diners with a rather odd conversation about quantum theory and Martin Amis. Well, I was confused anyway.

I've had a home on the web for more years than I care to remember, and a few kind souls persuade me it's worth persisting with keeping it updated. This current incarnation of the site is centred around the blog posts which began back in 1999 as 'the daylog' and continued through my travels and tribulations during the following years.

I don't get out and about nearly as much these days, but I do try to record significant events and trips for posterity. You may also have arrived here by following the trail to my former music blog Songs Heard On Fast Trains. That content is preserved here too.
